Blade Runner - The Final Review

I was lucky enough to catch the newest (and allegedly final) version of Blade Runner at my local cinema last night, and thought you might like to hear some feedback.

Yes, I know it’s coming out in a super duper multidisc box set in a week or so, but who can give up the chance of seeing it again on the big screen? Not me, buddy.

Overall it was a great experience, the image looked stunning; really sharp and perfectly saturated. The remastered audio was very cool. The atmosphere was tripled by the enhanced ambience and even in the quietest, most still moments, I remained completely absorbed. Of course, some of the biggest changes were in the addition of cut scenes, and the polishing of old effects, and I’ll try to give you a run down of what I noticed.

WARNING – IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM, AND DON’T WANT TO FALL FOUL OF ANY SPOILERS, STOP READING HERE.

Firstly, all the spinner shots have been tidied up, no wires to be seen at all. Also, some extra spinners have been added to the sky, and there are some additional shots of Harrison in his own spinner, pulling into his apartment complex. All of these shots just add to the concept of a bustling metropolis.

Bryant now says “four skinjobs” instead of “five” - a pretty important amendment.

The scene with the Egyptian has been sorted out – no more terrible lip sync issues.

One big change is the fixed Zhora death – now it looks like Joanna Cassidy falling through the windows, and not me in a wig. Also, the boots don’t disappear and reappear anymore. It looks like Joanna actually re-shot some of this (she is credited at the end and bluescreen is mentioned) – 25 years on and she’s still fit as a butcher’s dog!

Some big changes to Roy’s defining moments – the one swear word has been replaced.
Now he no longer says “I want more life… fucker!”, but instead the last word is ‘father’. I have to say, this kind of jarred me, but it makes more sense.
Still, it felt funny for some reason.

Also, we are treated to a much longer version of Tyrell’s death at Roy’s hands – but considering the emphasis put on the ‘eye’ throughout the film, this fits in extremely well.

There are some more tweaks and nudges throughout, but all in, this is the definitive version, and I was delighted to see it on the big screen one more time.

It would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention Vangelis’s contribution to this masterpiece, and his music is still as haunting and emotional as ever before – this truly is one of my favorite soundtracks, ever.

So there you go – don’t worry if you missed it, as it will be on DVD very soon – and who knows? If you come to sunny California, you can watch it in our theater, we’ll supply the popcorn.

That's in just two years, if we don't start saving some cash and clearing out all those old emails:

A flood of new video and other Web content could overwhelm the Internet by 2010 unless backbone providers invest up to $137 billion in new capacity, more than double what service providers plan to invest, according to the study , by Nemertes Research Group, an independent analysis firm. In North America alone, backbone investments of $42 billion to $55 billion will be needed in the next three to five years to keep up with demand, Nemertes said.

People like me will have to tighten our belts a little. Maybe I don't need those 12 blogs, even though I only use two or three. I'm going to do my part and clean out some of those hundreds of quirky yet never used photos in my photobucket and other online image storage accounts. I think my main photobucketfolder is 36 pages long and growing, and I have no idea how much more that amounts to with the 20 to 30 subfolders:p

Destiny's Way

I just finished Destiny's Way, book number ? out of ? in the New Jedi Order series. I don't feel like looking up the exact number at the moment. As my trek through the NJO began, I really was not a fan of the series. I didn't mind the significant deaths as much as I didn't enjoy the dreary, defeatist, gloomy tone of the thing. The Yuuzhan Vong were just overwhelmingly awful.

Yet, I stuck with it and I think I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed Destiny's Way. I'm sure part of it is that the good guys are starting to have a little bit of success. But I've also enjoyed seeing the beginnings of Jacen's path towards Sith-iness. His relationships with Vergere has many similarities with his relationship with Lumiya. Which makes sense.

So, now that I'm down to five or so NJO books remaining, I'm actually looking forward to the rest of them.

I haven't been around so much, as I've been consumed by sporting events. The D-Backs had a good run, the Suns are starting up and -- only a little behind schedule -- the Cards are starting to implode.

A sports guy on the local radio said that the thing on Curt Warner's arm last Sunday looked like something that the Emperor grafted onto Darth Vader. Then, reading Bill Simmons, he cut-and-pasted this email for us:

"Bill, when Drew hit that grand slam in the first inning, I felt just like I did when I saw 'Return of the Jedi' for the first time. After hating Darth Vader for nearly nine hours of the original Star Wars trilogy, he does that one great thing at the end and saves Luke Skywalker's life. We forgot all about how he killed scores of people, including the whole planet of Alderaan."

Star Wars is everywhere, I suppose.

I've always enjoyed the similarities between sports and the Saga.

I apologize. After thinking long and hard, one night, while I was sleeping... or maybe it was the tuna sandwich I had before bed... anyway, I've decided to decline my nomination for the presidency due to the revelation that I could save the world with a My Pretty Pony brigade much more efficiently than I could while dozing off in the Oval Office. Thunder tends to agree, and while I tried to pass the offer to him, he decided much more quickly than I that sleeping and eating were a much better catalyst to world peace, right where he is now. So we both decided to pass the nomination to office on to Zonkers the cat, who has all the time in the world to do whatever strikes her fancy. We told Zonkers that there was an endless supply of lint balls in DC to occupy her during the long term in office. She whole heartedly stepped up to the task!

I, Jedi

Has anybody here read I, Jedi? I just finished it and it was quite good. The first-person perspective was kind of neat and worked out better than I would have thought.

It was also cool to see the events of the Jedi Academy trilogy from Corran Horn's perspective. And, Horn is just a cool character period. Also I, Jedi had the best descriptions I've read about how it feels to sense and use the Force. It made it seem like a very real part of the world. I need to go check my midichlorian count to see if I'm getting closer to Jedi levels.

I can't find any pictures of her online and costumes - BAH! They're all either Jack, Elizabeth or Will. I mentioned the Oriental Elizabeth costume to her a couple weeks back but she was adamently against it.

Okay, maybe it's all youtube's fault, since when I followed her link, I saw all the "related video" on the page with crazy amounts of Thriller rip-offs! I couldn't resist posting.

for future reference - all ya gotta do is look for the embed code and copy it. in youtube's case, it is to the right of the video where all the info is, right under tags and the url link.

when you are in post writing mode here at blogger, you need to choose "edit html" mode on the upper right menu tab (as opposed to "compose" mode) and paste the embed code in there. after you've pasted the embed code in "edit html", you can toggle back to "compose mode" at your leisure.

Star Wars reimagined?

The "reimagined" Battlestar Galactica is pretty much a kick-butt success. It took a mildly interesting 70's sci-fi show, put it in the blender, kept some important ingredients and out came some greatness.

Could the same be done with Star Wars? I love me some Star Wars, so I don't toss this idea out there because I have a problem with anything in the GFFA. I'm largely a happy-go-lucky Star Wars fan.

But...I can imagine some pretty cool "reimaginings" of Star Wars. Keep some of the basic elements of Star Wars: Skywalkers, Jedi, the Force; but, do something different with it. More ambiguous, more complex, start from scratch.

If you were to reimagine Star Wars, what would be some things you'd do?

A few ideas off the top of my head:

Jar-Jar Binks betrays the Jedi and leads to their destruction. I envision him in a Baltar-like role.
Not starting the story with baby Anakin. Start with Anakin as a young man.
Anakin Skywalker and Palpatine are young Jedi together, along with Obi-Wan. Essentially they are all contemporaries. Obi-Wan is the "good influence"; Palpatine is the "bad influence" who feels the Jedi should take a more active role in maintaining galactic peace.
Only one Death Star blows up. No need for two Death Stars.
Ewoks are vicious sharp-teethed killers.
Or there are no Ewoks at all.
No midi-chlorians. The Force is completely mystical and unexplainable.

Next weekend, here in Houston, at a little movie theatre in River Oaks (called The River Oaks Theatre, of course), at their weekly midnight show, they're showing Serenity!!! Woo-hoo!!!

Having never seen it on the big screen when it was originally released, I'm completely stoked about having the chance to see it in a theatre!! :D

On top of that, the following weekend, the midnight show will be Flash Gordon!!!!! Wheeeeee!!! Or should I say, SQQQQQQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! I saw it on the big screen when it came out..... many multiple times..... but it will be fantastic to see it in all its glory once again!!

*sigh* Nathan Fillion, Sam Jones and Timothy Dalton.... I'll be in heaven... ;)

Heh - I was just daydreaming (procrastinating), and thought of a few people I would love to cast in a movie together. Not sure what the movie is yet, but my cast so far is:

- Hayden Christensen
- Masi Oka

The list is to be continued. I was thinking of people who aren't huge names yet except in genre fan circles of course, and perhaps with the exception of Clive Owen who is becoming more well known. Maybe Masi is now too. Hmmm... who else?

Could there be anything better? This was pointed to by Club Jade, which was apparently pointed to by Stooge - so thanks guys! I saw this on TV a long time ago, and tried to find it uploaded on the web. I seem to remember finding this when Charlie Rose episodes were on Google video, but for a fee. So thanks to youtube too, and to Google for owning youtube, and to The Charlie Rose show for making these accessible for free :)

And if one hour with George and Charlie isn't enough, move on to course two: an hour with George from the D5 annual tech and media conference.

What's on your bed stand? Okay, I don't need the gory details... I mean books! Also, what movies or shows have you guys been watching on DVD or actual TV, or seen in theaters recently?

Moi? *bats eyelashes* I haven't had too much time for leisure reading, and when I do, I go in mad spurts. As I commented in rj's review of Inferno (spoilers!), I came to a screeching halt with any more forward reading of the EU, since I couldn't take any major characters from the OT dying off. I have I, Jedi bookmarked about 1/4 through after having started reading it a year or so ago, putting it down, then picking it back up again and starting from the beginning again about a month ago. I'm also flipping through Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces again. LOL, other than that, I'm reading through Kaplan's GRE study guide *vomits*

I just finished watching Inagaki's Musashi trilogy on DVD. Had the first one on video, but never got to see the rest until now. Love the old samurai flicks, and I love the myth of Myamoto Musashi. These films are very spaghetti western and melodramatic, but Toshiro Mifune is a joy to watch in this, and the two female leads played by Kaoru Yachigusa and Mariko Okada are outstanding! I have the Mushashi novel by Eiji Yoshikawa, and that's prolly going to be the next big read I start.

Also just finished watching everything of the new Battlestar Galactica on DVD so far again (seasons 1 through 2.5) just in time to catch the next round of season 3 reruns on the Sci Fi channel starting later this month. Yeay. I think a lot of you know whatta BSG geek I am :) Alas, it's looking once again as though the season 3 DVDs won't come out until just before season 4 starts in January :(

Not much else... picked up the Dune Extended edition the other day. I'll probably watch that again one of these days soon. Otherwise - anybody planning for Halloween yet? Some costume ideas below, or click here to watch with music :D.

Mad saber skillz

Many moons ago, I blogged over on SW about a friend of mine who acted in one of my movies being in a fan film - well, the film is available for download and looking at, and if you go here you can check it out.
Now, it's not great, too many houses and fences and door handles in it for my liking, but the saber effects are impressive, and Amos (the bald jedi) does a lot of fancy saber twirling.
Anyhoo - just in case you wanted to waste half an hour - here you go.
BTW - I recommend the high quality download, not the YouTube or iPod versions...

Thanks for the invite to this spiffy looking blogsite! Whew!! It's cool! Can I order a Shirley Temple from the bar? LOL!

I just returned from a week in Denver late last night. I was there on business and loved every minute of it. Denver is one of my favorite cities!

My flight getting home was delayed, though, and I was supposed to get home at 8:45pm, but due to weather issues in Houston, I was delayed until 10:45!!! :O So not fun!

While I was in Denver, I located a Target and was able to get some packs of the 30th Anniversary trading cards. I just love those cards and collecting cards and trying to make frakking SET out of the packs of cards. I've never managed to accomplish that task. I'm sure I'll end up buying the entire set later. ;)

Ami, love the prints all framed!! Beautiful! I haven't done that to any of my CV prints yet. I really need to get a move on, huh?

Hey dudes!

I don't know if you guys have ever heard of or seen this before, but this is an amazing DVD (or 2!) for kids & anyone who happens to think music & animation is cool. It's called AniMusic. Matt just bought the first DVD for use in his classroom but we're sitting here watching it.

It's so hypnotic- the attention to detail is insane! We have just been sitting here mesmerized. They were showing some of Animusic 2 on PBS a few weeks ago which was where I saw it for the first time. Andrew loves it, too!!

I told Matt he should just play this for me at night to help me get to sleep!!

Clearing out a bunch of emails and found the invite... thought it was some sort of fluke from the last time an invite went out. Was there a reason we created a new one - I feel like I missed something! LOL =D

I just did something I haven't done on a Sunday afternoon in...ooohhh...months maybe, and in a location I haven't done it EVER. Get your minds out of the gutter, kids. I just took a nap on the swing on my deck. A NAP! For a whole hour! It was in the 90's recently, but today, after a big storm last night, it's absolutely amazing outside with temps in the 70's, and I just took a nap on a deck swing.

Life is freaking good. Even if it's just for today, life is good.

jk asked what we would like to see here. Hmmmmmmmm. Just each other for now. I'm easy to please!! Absolutely no pressure. Absolutely no expectations. Just our online buds hanging out and having a virtual drink.

If you want to add some Jason Bourne links, that would be fine, too! :D :D :D (I'm in the mood to watch all three of those films again!)

So in the interest of doing what we can't do at the OS, I think I'll dig up a picture of something fun to post...gimme a sec...hold on...there. Two of my C4 acquisitions, now framed and hung in what is my make-shift "office" (messy dining room that we don't have a dining room table in but desks and computers instead!). I'm not much of a collector, but I do have a few things lurking around this room....

So there you have it. Hanging out on a Sunday...ami-style... :)

Another day, another blog. But hey! We can post pictures, video, and do whatever the frak we want with the format here. Sending out invites right after this. Yeah... something else to do online. The galaxy is our space-oyster.

Right now, this "space" is completely open to view and comment (commenting even by non-members). I can change any of that, so we can vote and squabble on it all. I'll tweak out the format so it's more purty (which will surely be an ongoing process), but if anyone wants to get jiggy with design, I can hand over the reins. This is mostly for social purposes. It's amazing what I do when I get a long overdue day off (aka - what am I thinking making another one of these things??) :p
