Could the same be done with Star Wars? I love me some Star Wars, so I don't toss this idea out there because I have a problem with anything in the GFFA. I'm largely a happy-go-lucky Star Wars fan.
But...I can imagine some pretty cool "reimaginings" of Star Wars. Keep some of the basic elements of Star Wars: Skywalkers, Jedi, the Force; but, do something different with it. More ambiguous, more complex, start from scratch.
If you were to reimagine Star Wars, what would be some things you'd do?
A few ideas off the top of my head:
- Jar-Jar Binks betrays the Jedi and leads to their destruction. I envision him in a Baltar-like role.
- Not starting the story with baby Anakin. Start with Anakin as a young man.
- Anakin Skywalker and Palpatine are young Jedi together, along with Obi-Wan. Essentially they are all contemporaries. Obi-Wan is the "good influence"; Palpatine is the "bad influence" who feels the Jedi should take a more active role in maintaining galactic peace.
- Only one Death Star blows up. No need for two Death Stars.
- Ewoks are vicious sharp-teethed killers.
- Or there are no Ewoks at all.
- No midi-chlorians. The Force is completely mystical and unexplainable.

i like the jar jar as baltar idea - or perhaps even palatine becomes more like baltar (ambiguous - not quite so evil, but not innocent).
since we're on the topic of BSG too (everyone in bar rolls eyes), there is something somewhat personal i've always wanted to be diferent in SW, or at least something i would have done different. it would've had to do with leia being more prominently the hero. lol - of course i'm a female... and of course GL is male and is largely writing the archetypal roles through his own perspective. but to me, the absolute most glorious thing about the new BSG is kara thrace. i dont think the world of 1977 might have ben ready for a leia like starbuck, but then again, was the world ready for SW at all anyway?
I could deal with a stronger Leia presence.
Re BSG: I'm not a huge Kara Thrace fan. I find the character interesting and well done, but I don't like the character. Now, President Roslyn is my female BSG character of choice. Mary McDonnell just acts the pants off of that character. She's awesome.
Leia should smoke cigars.

Anyhoo, my idea for an overhaul would be not to have Vader be Luke's father - just make him a symbol of evil manifested. He could still be Obi-Wan's old pupil, and really have killed Luke's dad - also, get a stronger female character in by replacing Chewie with a tough as boots lass who keeps Han in line - that way both guys get lucky.
R2 flies in every episode and the stormtroopers look like McQuarrie's original concept, complete with sabers.
Oh, and half way through the season, Luke is turned to the dark side and has to fight Han and Leia.
And I'm spent.

I'm not quite sure I'm ready for a "reimagined" SW, but there are some ideas here with some merit.
RJ, I really like the Anakin/Palps/Obi-wan at the Jedi academy together and having kind of an angel/devil tug-of-war with Anakin. Cool!

maybe more Jedi could've survived the purge and there would have been more mentors for Luke. The Force would have drawn them to one location for some kick-butt training!
Or Qui-Gon goes farther into the series ... at least to Ep III where he and Anakin secretly have a pod race competition on Malastare to see who is the *real* pod racer champion of the galaxy.

I would have Luke and Leia not be brother and sister. I mean, how is it really necessary? It's not a big deal to me, but it's always sort of bugged me. It just seems to complicate things more...
I would've had Padme' live longer and raise Leia, until she's about 4 or 5, and then get killed by the Empire somehow, like in an invasion on Naboo or something. That would help clarify the Ewok village Leia/Luke confession scene for me (and for a few *ahem* others out there :p).
I would have the PT start with Anakin as a teen, not a little kid.
And I think that's about it for now... :D
I've always sorta considered the "what if they re-did SW" conversations to be somewhat pointless... but I gotta admit, your comparison to BG really is a good one. Maybe it is possible (after GL has passed on, of course). In fact, maybe it would work best on teevee...
Ok, everyone is probably sick of hearing me spout this off, BUT, if I were to reimagine Star Wars it would ALL have to do with the PT. And everything would be different:
EP. 1: start w/Anakin around 19, an awesome pilot, getting swept up w/the Jedi just like Luke and has some major victory not unlike the Battle of Yavin.
EP. 2: Anakin begins his Jedi training w/Obi-Wan & in the end is betrayed by Palpatine. The movie ends w/Anakin & Obi-Wan's duel, Padme's exile & birth of the twins (who shall remain NAMELESS!!), and the birth of Vader.
EP. 3: DV begins his galaxy-wide Jedi purge. We see Boba Fett in the role that was mentioned years ago: DV's muscle during the extermination. By the end of the movie, Padme has died, Obi-Wan is in exile on Tatooine & the twins are swept away (again, we still don't know their names!)
I realize that these are the very things that got most of us chatting 2 years ago on the "Padme Thread"!!! LOL! I'm still hardheaded about a bunch of things, one of which I would not have had any familial connection between Anakin & Owen, I would have left that as Ben & Owen being brothers (as per the ROTJ novelization) to keep the secrecy believable!
